Kansas City
I serve a thriving community radiating out from the Kansas City area.
Anyone may participate in Midwest Burners, our Burning Man-inspired social
and recreational association, regardless of your geographic location.
Most of us live primarily in Missouri and Kansas though. In fact, our
Afterburn party HullabalU, happens in Kansas while we meet the St. Louis
community in the middle of Missouri for our Regional Burn, InterFuse.
During the year we plan our two major events, as well as get together for outings, house parties, and art projects. At Burning Man, local burners camp all over the playa but a group of us like to camp together in the 'burbs at our Kansas Refugee Camp.

| personal quote: | The Midwest may seem like a cultural desert. Yet, I find that this region, like the actual desert, really brings out the relevance of burner culture. Artistic people are spread out over long distances here. Creative communities are smaller in Midwestern cities. New and original ideas arrive later. As a result, we learn to do things ourselves because no one else is doing them. We have to collaborate with other far-flung communities for our burns and festivals. Since there are less of us, we are challenged to be more personally creative and proactive. To play on a Dune quote, God made the Midwest to train the freaks! |
