We hereby declare that all burners who live south of Highway 92 in the San Francisco Bay Area are officially South Bay Burners (yes, even if you go to the City for burny things, too!) There are parties, workshops, fire practices and pot lucks in your own back yard, ya know!
In 2008 we hosted a month-long installation of Peter Hudson’s beloved playa art piece, Homouroboros (a/k/a “The Monkeys”) in conjunction with the Black Rock Arts Foundation. Smack dab in the middle of downtown San Jose and right next to the Children’s Discovery Museum, this interactive installation delighted children, urban workers and downtown residents from 10am to 11pm each day.
Beginning in 2007 we have also hosted the region’s local 3-day, 2-night camping event called Soulstance in mid-June. Joining forces with Santa Cruz and Monterey in 2008, we've had about 300 attendees and massive list of activities and theme camps each year. In 2010 the name of the event was changed to SoulFire, and in 2011 the event will be held the weekend of June 17-19.
How to build an art project/theme camp/regional event: If you want to build a ship, don't drum up the men to gather wood, divide the wood, and give orders. Instead, teach for them to yearn for the vast and endless sea.
