Edmonton

Edmonton is just another great city of the Great White North as we Canucks call it. We have a population of about one million in the metro area. City of Edmonton website = www.gov.edmonton.ab.ca. We are 3 hours north of the city of Calgary. Edmonton and Calgary collectively come together to plan Burning Man related events, share resources, rides, camps, etc., as we are close both physically and socially. We have an announcement/discussion list for the province of Alberta (alberta-list@burningman.com) and also have an AlbertaBurn webpage (www.albertaburn.com). Calgary Regional Contact = Zac Bolan - Calgary Regional.

Alberta Burners come together a few times over the year, hosting an annual "Prairie Fire" regional Decompression event for two years now just outside of Calgary. There have also been other events such as a Kanadian Broadcasting Korporation party, SantaCon, summer & winter Solstice gatherings, attendance at local arts events/openings, potlucks, socials, dancing, mayhem, and general brou ha ha.

We have camped together en masse, having about 50 some Alberta Burners and associate/wanna-be Canadians on the playa in one camping location in 2003. There are other clusters of Alberta Burners as well - sometimes we simply cannot get all of us connected! We share ideas on camping, art, supplies, costumes, how to navigate 5000 kilometres trekking from year-round home to playa home, and how to survive plus 40 C for a week when we come from a land generally associated with igloos!

The Alberta List is generally for announcements of Burning Man related events, other events of interest pertaining to the arts or socially conscious community, social gatherings, important posts forwarded from other regions, ticket info, ride sharing, camp coordination, etc. Number of posts per week ranges from 1 to 5 on average, depending on what we got cookin'. Most posts off topic are worthwhile and interesting!

Recent Events:
"Prairie Fire" Introspection Dekompression Event - November 2002, 2003 - held at a community hall outside of Calgary. This past year's event hosted a gathering of about 120 burning men and women with a potluck, local dj's, art, firespinning, indoor theme camps, dancing, and a general vibe of the playa all around. We also had live music acts and a fashion show at our 2002 Dekomp event.
SantaCon has been held in December 2001, 2002, and 2003 in Calgary, and December 2002 and 2003 in Edmonton. If you don't know what this mayhem is all about, a bunch of burners and burner-like folk get dressed as Santa or related Christmas type theme and bring general craziness to the streets - everything from handing out strange gifts to karaoke to riding public transport en masse to dancing, eating, drinking and being merry.

Please check back for even more information about the Burning Man community in your area. We're gathering more details — coming soon!
