Calgary
The
Alberta Burning Man community is connected mainly through cities of Calgary
and Edmonton, but there are others scattered throughout the province as
well. Both major cities have active groups of Burners who not only plan
together for the large trek down to the desert every year, but also interact
throughout the year by attending local and out-of town festivals together,
doing seasonal events such as SantaCon, and participating in as much radically
expressive crazed costuming activity as these here northern parts allow.
We are a diverse community and our relationships extend well beyond the
context of the playa.
There are several “groupings” of Burners mainly in Calgary and Edmonton who have been responsible for registered and non-registered theme camps in the past several years. Some folks are also involved with camps based out of other regions. Other Burners camp on playa in smaller arrangements – there are a lot of options! Many of these groups have offered interactive events while on playa, and many of us are involved with some kind of organized volunteer group as well (i.e., rangers, REMSA, greeters).
We also try to collaborate as much as possible on the transportation down to the Burn itself, as it can be a resource and time-intensive experience coming from Canada! Many people do ride-sharing and caravanning down, and thus there are always people looking for or offering rides up until the Burn. Connecting with fellow Alberta-based Burners is a great way to get set up for the actual event, or keep connected the other 51 weeks out of the year! For some of us – it’s a lifestyle!!
